SUMMARY:Citizens Safety Academy - CSA Gateway Instructor Certification
DESCRIPTION:Course Overview\nThis course teaches experienced shooters how to teach a basic defense-oriented pistol curriculum in the paradigm of “gateway instruction” developed by Citizens Safety Academy. \nCourse Details\nThere are many instructor certification courses available\, but most suffer from at least one of three common shortcomings. First\, they often spend too much time on shooting and not enough time on teaching how to teach. Second\, they often focus on teaching intermediate-level shooters without enough attention paid to the nuances of managing a class full of brand-new\, first-time shooters. Third\, many instructor courses tend to ignore the cultural and demographic dynamics of today’s market of firearms trainees. \nWith the recent explosion of gun purchases by urbanites\, millennials\, trauma victims\, and others who don’t fit the traditional stereotypes of gun ownership\, firearms trainers must adapt to the rapidly-evolving 21st Century market. CSA developed what we call the “gateway” instructional model in an effort to fill those gaps in the training community. \nInstructor candidates will learn and demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises during the course (including leading a line of live-fire shooters through a course of fire). Candidates will also have to pass an instructor certification examination and a shooting qualification course of fire. The course also includes an Instructor’s Guide that participants can take home with them for future reference. \nTopics Covered\nEvery class is a little different\, so we often have to make adjustments based on time and facility constraints; but our standard Gateway Instructor curriculum includes the following: \n\nAdult learning theory\nEffective communication skills / public speaking\nDepoliticizing instruction\, content\, and facilities\nDesigning and using effective training aids\nConnecting with inexperienced\, fearful\, and non-traditional students\nMaking classroom lectures interactive and engaging\nEffective use of multi-media in the modern classroom\nConcepts from the pivotal text\, “Telling Ain’t Training\,” by Keeps and Stolovitch\nClassroom management\nRange management\nTeaching basic principles of lawful defensive force\nManaging students with past trauma or emotional triggers\nEffective assessment / written examination design\nHow to control and command a firing line\nThe “Less is More” principle\nEffective range commands\nStudent-centric range exercises\nDifferentiating between skill drills and performance drills\nManaging students with physical limitations or disabilities\nTeaching both left- and right-handed students\nManaging firing lines with revolvers and semi-autos of different action types\nEffective use of assistant instructors\nSafety protocols and emergency procedures\nAnd much more!\n\nPrerequisites\nInstructor candidates must possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training and/or previous shooting experience. Candidates will be required to demonstrate how to safely handle\, load\, and unload both a revolver and a semi-automatic pistol. \nWhat is “gateway instruction”?\nWhen we say “gateway instruction\,” we mean true entry-level content\, designed for students who overcome boundaries\, obstacles\, social disincentives\, or other adverse odds to learn to shoot for the first time. We have found that many “beginner” classes on the market today are often weighed down by assumptions and misperceptions about what new shooters typically bring to the table. These classes often take for granted that every student has the same opinion about guns\, everyone has the same understanding of gun safety\, and everyone generally understands how guns work and what they’re used for. But that’s not the case. \nAt CSA\, we take a different approach. Gateway instruction levels the playing field by allowing all students to enter the firearms training world without any pressure to know more than they know or to be someone other than who they are. One of the many benefits of this teaching technique (and the reason we call it “gateway instruction”) is that it increases the chances of students investing in more training and becoming members of the training community rather than just visitors or sightseers. We hope to be an “on-ramp” for those who might otherwise see themselves as outsiders to the gun world.

SUMMARY:Tactical Anatomy Systems - Shooting with Xray Vision Instructor course
DESCRIPTION:Shooting WIth Xray Vision – Instructor is not just another shooting class.  It is a true instructor class\, designed by instructors for experienced instructors. Your instructors\, Dr. James Williams and Chuck Haggard\, are nationally recognized teachers who have over half a century of teaching experience between them.  This class is designed to give the instructor-student new tools to use in his or her own classes after you leave. \nDr. Williams has been an ER\, ICU\, and trauma physician for the past 35 years. He served as a police medical officer and SWAT team medic in Wisconsin until 2011\, and has been instructing the Tactical Anatomy curriculum since 2004. He was a regular instructor at ILEETA and IALEFI for many years\, and was keynote speaker for the IALEFI international conference in 2009.  He has been conducting SXRV-Instructor on an occasional basis since 2004\, generally reserving it for law enforcement groups only until 2011\, when he opened it to non-sworn personnel. The class was not held from 2014 until 2022\, but because of persistent demand Dr. Williams has revived and revitalized the course for modern instructors. \nDr. Williams has plans to retire from medical practice by 2028\, and will likely retire from active teaching then as well.  As such\, the 2026 class will probably be the second-last Shooting With Xray Vision class. \nChuck Haggard retired from active police work several years ago but returned to it almost immediately and continues as an active cop today. He has been teaching firearms and tactics from his vast experience in the field for over 25 years.  Chuck is particularly well known for his work in teaching terminal ballistics and evaluating effectiveness of specific ammunition exemplars. He has been recognized for his instructional excellence by several national organizations. He has been one of the SXRV-I instructors since we revived the course in 2022 and we are delighted to have him back again this year. \nAttendees will be exposed to a vast body of knowledge that the instructors have studied for many years. Topics to be covered in the class include the historical context of this field; the realities of gunfights and other armed conflicts; practical ballistics\, including external and terminal ballistics; medical realities of human anatomy and physiology;  gunshot wounds/wounding and incapacitation; modeling of 3-dimensional anatomy in time and space; adult learning realities; instructional tips and tricks for teaching realistic ballistic targeting to students. \nAttendees should expect this to be an actual 16-hour class. You will be challenged to learn as you have rarely been challenged before.

SUMMARY:Immediate Action Combatives - Cecil Burch - Grappling for Self- Defense in a Weapons Based Environment
DESCRIPTION:I \nReal World Application of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu\, Wrestling\, and Boxing in a Weapon-Based-Environment (WBE) \nContrary to popular belief\, many empty hand fights and those involving weapons\, end up entangled\, either standing or on the ground. No amount of pontificating or self-proclaimed “expert” posturing will change this simple fact. If you ignore this reality\, you may very well find yourself in a situation you cannot handle with disastrous consequences. This course is designed to give the layman a realistic and functional set of concepts\, techniques\, methodologies\, training drills and experiences that will prepare them for a worst case grappling scenario. All techniques and concepts are high percentile applications which span a wide spectrum of confrontations. Training consists of presentation\, drilling and Force-On-Force evolutions providing attendees with immediate feedback regarding the efficacy of the skills learned. The goal of this course is not to create a “ground fighter” or grappler. The objective is to provide attendees who have limited training time and resources with solid ground survival and escape fundamentals geared toward the increasingly violent weapon based environments they may live\, work and/or travel within. And all techniques/concepts are from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu\, Wrestling\, and Boxing and are combat proven over the past 80 years by thousands and thousands of practitioners\, including the U.S. Army. \n• These methods are for everyone regardless of physical condition – young\, old\, male\, female\, athlete or not – You DO NOT have to be a professional fighter to perform at a functional level. This will be a class about physical training\, but it is NOT boot camp. Participants may go at the pace that is comfortable for them\, while trying to push the envelope of their own individual performance.\n• Requirements: loose\, comfortable but durable clothes\, mouthpiece\, cup\, notebook\, and an open mind. Boxing or MMA gloves are strongly encouraged\, but are not mandatory. Blue Guns and matched holsters\, and training knives are a good idea\, but there will be loaners available. \nSurviving/defending/escaping from the bottom\nGetting back to your feet / staying upright\nDefending against strikes on the ground or clinch\nDenying the attacker weapon access – understanding technique\, positional hierarchy\, and timing\nProper role of “dirty tactics”\nMultiple opponents\nEssential training principles\, methods\, and drills\nUnderlying concepts and mindset for the clinch in a self-defense context\nDealing with the sucker punch/ambush\nFundamentals of the clinch\nControlling the entanglement\nDisengaging and making distance for escape\, weapons access or orientation reset\nPerformance coaching and troubleshooting\nStructuring and balancing your training for a real world lifestyle \nAbout Cecil Burch \nCecil Burch has been training functional Martial Arts for over forty years. He has studied many different arts and systems and has held numerous teaching credentials in a number of them\, including multiple Filipino\, Indonesian\, modern eclectic street fighting/combatives arts\, and many of the combat sports. \nWhile he got his first training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1989 and spent time at Rickson Gracie’s gym in 1993\, he began a dedicated study in 1994 with Megaton Dias. Cecil is currently a 3rd degree black belt under Megaton and has competed extensively\, including the 2015 Pan-American Championships (silver medal – black belt)\, 2013 Masters World Championships (bronze medal as black belt)\, etc. \nCecil has also been a firearms enthusiast all his life. He went through his first NRA course at the age of twelve\, and shot competitive skeet leagues. In 1987 he took the General Pistol class at Gunsite under Jeff Cooper and Louis Awerbuck\, and he has trained extensively with SouthNarc in multiple classes (including assisting Craig in many of them)\, Larry Vickers\, Mike Pannone\, Ernest Langdon\, Tom Givens\, and Pat McNamara\, among others. He has also competed in many different types of firearm competitions. \nCecil has travelled extensively and conducted seminars across the U.S. as well as internationally and has been a featured presenter at many tactical/defense oriented conferences including many times at Rangemaster Polite Society Conference and has worked extensively with Law Enforcement officers\, Federal Air Marshals\, military special operation troops\, and private citizens on the functional utilization of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu\, boxing\, and clinch work in close quarters combat and how they can be integrated with a weapons based environment \n\nThere is a $75 range fee for the three days payable to Meadhall on Friday at the beginning of the course
